Product description
Sars pottery, slip oyster set, 1970s. Oyster service in barbotine, brown glazed ceramic. Signed sars poterie maine on the reverse. Six plates, triangular pattern with six oyster slots and one lemon slot. In excellent condition, with a microchip on one plate. 25 X 26 X 2 cm. Clean, fast and careful shipment. The village of sars-poteries owes the second part of its name to the many artisan pottery factories that date back to the 18th century. The clay used to make the pottery was extracted from the soil, with deposits of fossilized black ash discovered in 1777 and used as a soil improver. This industry was imported to Sars by potters from Bouffioulx (Belgium). In 1838, there were nine earthenware potteries, eight stoneware potteries and a fossil ash quarry. The large ceramics industry (pipes, sinks, sanitaryware) has long since disappeared. Only small workshops making pots, jugs, vases and other containers remained in the 1970s and 1980s (poteries maine, lempereur, etc.).
