This set of 4 Mondial chairs were designed by father and son Gerrit and Wim Rietveld in 1956-1957 and were produced and sold by the Gispen N.V. company. Wim Rietveld, Gerrit Rietveld's son, was a designer at the Gispen furniture company from 1953 to 1957. At that time, Willem Gispen had already left the company. In '56-'57 father and son designed together a special chair "the Mondial" for the Dutch pavilion of Expo 58 in Brussels, this was the first world exhibition after World War II. From this, the chair got its name Mondial. Gerrit Rietveld was responsible for the design while Wim undertook the technical development. In 1957, the chair was presented at the Milan Triennial, where the design was awarded a gold medal. The chair was not a commercial success then, unfortunately. But now it is a real collector's item! This is a set of four pieces in the famous colors red, yellow, blue and white. This Mondial chair is included in the design collections of a number of museums. In the Netherlands, the Stedelijk Museum, the Centraal Museum and the Rijksmuseum, among others, own a Mondial. The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has a rare red example in its collection. The Mondial is a stackable and linkable chair, with a frame of sheet steel and a seat folded from an aluminum plate. In side view, the legs form a K-pattern; the legs meet at the back of the seat and are attached to a steel tube 25mm in diameter. There this version with bakelite armrests, this model is the 217. The chairs are in good condition, sturdy and with the original floor caps. New floor caps, produced by ourselves with our 3D printer and a special mix of Carbon and rubber are included! The chairs have some paint damage, some damage from stacking and the usual marks from years of use of course. Please see the pictures. More photos if desired available at no cost of course.
