Ton Schulten (Ootmarsum, 1938)
Ton Schulten was born in Ootmarsum as the son of a baker. He grew up in a traditional Catholic middle-class family with six children. Schulten begins a priest's training but leaves it when he realizes he wants to take a more artistic path. He went to work as a window dresser at Vroom & Dreesman and took the evening course at the Academy of Art and Industry in Enschede where he graduated with honors in 1962. In 1961, Schulten joins a leading advertising agency. However, he continues to draw and paint in his scarce free time. However, it is not until Schulten puts a stop to his advertising career that he can truly follow his artistic conscience. He has had enough of, as he calls it, "playing manager. It alienates him from the creative process. In addition, Ton gets involved in a serious car accident with his wife Ank in 1991. A good friend of the couple is killed. It marks a turning point in Ton's life. Via abstract canvases with geometric shapes and large floral paintings, Schulten arrives at the Twente landscape. The landscape mosaic becomes his signature subject. Schulten has felt an affinity with the Twente landscape from an early age. Characteristic of his work are intense colors and wide vertical strips on his canvases. The details in his works are again paintings in their own right. Schulten is inspired by the Twente coulisse landscape. Here he finds not only the ideas, but also the peace, space and unique light to create tirelessly. Schulten rises daily at two, three in the morning to work in complete seclusion in his studio. His credo is "I let things happen that can't happen, but are terribly interesting in terms of their effect. In this way a constantly new, creative process emerges'.
