About Rudi Pillen
" Rudi Pillen (Moen, January 6, 1931 - Blankenberge, March 24, 2014) was a Belgian artist.
From 1949 he studied fine arts at the Sint-Lucasschool in Ghent. Six years after his first visit to Africa in 1956, he went to live in Zaire only to return after 13 years.
Pillen's work reflects a great deal of creativity. Over a period of more than 50 years, his work evolved from expressionism - inspired by his stay in Africa - to contemporary modern art. The influence of African culture is especially evident in the colorful scenes. People are central to his work. Figures are never fixed on the ground but "float."
His best-known work can be seen in "Thailand Cultural Centre" in the Bangkok subway. There, a work on a canvas measuring 2 meters by 10 meters was unveiled by Princess Astrid and Prince Lorenz of Belgium. His works have also been shown in the past in San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Paris, Kinshasa and Johannesburg, among other places.
In 2006, a report on Rudi Pillen was made for an ATV television program.
