Maartje Wijngaarden is a late bloomer in art. Only after the age of 35 did she develop into a professional visual artist. Initially she painted quite traditional landscapes and still lifes in neo-impressionist style. She gradually developed her own signature, with her vision of nature and how she cares for people and animals as the main theme. Her recent works almost always depict animals. Sometimes she also paints scenes about the relationship between humans and animals. Her shapes are always abstracted and often have heavy contours. The most striking thing is the bold and often bright use of color. Maartje Wijngaarden is listed in the register of the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD):
