Fabric The designer: Coen de Vries is a Dutch industrial designer and furniture designer, born in The Hague on Aug. 22, 1918. He studied furniture construction and interior design at the Royal Academy in The Hague. As part of an exchange program, he took classes at the Institute for Art Education in Amsterdam, where he was taught by Mart Stam and Johan Niegeman, who had trained at the Bauhaus in Dessau. After these studies, he set up the store "De Sleutel," where he sold designs by others in addition to his own. Coen de Vries was an active member of the Goed Wonen Foundation. Between 1952 and 1961, five model homes of Goed Wonen were furnished by him: Weesp (1952-1953), Amsterdam (1956 and 1958-1959), The Hague (1957) and Utrecht (1961). These houses showed how one could live, what possibilities there were. Coen de Vries worked as an industrial designer for various factories such as Everest furniture factories in Rotterdam, instrument factory Devo in The Hague, Plusmeubelen and the Venlosche club armchair factory and worked as a consulting designer at Mepal, Lips, Gispen, Bruynzeel Kastenfabrieken, Eeka furniture and Fröscher (Germany). At Gispen, he took care of the corporate identity and designed furniture. His goal was to develop good, practical, modern and aesthetically pleasing furniture at an affordable price. The base is made of match chrome rectangular steel. The frame of the seat and back is made of converted sheet steel. In the Gispen brochure, the armchairs were touted as "stylish, unobtrusive and trouble-free. Seat depth: 50 cm Seat width: 58 cm Seat height: 44 cm Armrest height: 56 cm
