Rispal luminaires were not designed by "Jean" Rispal, who never existed, but by the company's in-house styling department. Best known for its biomorphic luminaires (or organic design), Rispal uses sapelli wood to create graceful, flowing curves, as well as pleated paper (actually cellulose acetate). His creations have gone down in international design history, notably his "Mante Religieuse" floor lamp, now considered one of the finest French lighting creations of the 1950s.
