Nii studied architecture at Tokyo University before working as a furniture designer for various companies. In the 1950s, he began designing folding chairs, seeking to create furniture that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. He patented his "NY" folding chair in 1960, which quickly became very popular due to its elegant design and ease of use. In addition to his work on the "NY" chair, Nii designed other folding chairs, as well as stools and sofas. He has also worked on architecture, graphic design and theater set design projects. Today, the "NY" chair is considered a design classic, with examples in the permanent collections of many museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Takeshi Nii remains an important figure in 20th-century Japanese design.
