Mouille developed an early interest in art and design, and after studying at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, he graduated in 1941. He then worked as an assistant to Gabriel Lacroix, a French master wrought-iron craftsman. It was this experience that shaped his passion for manipulating metal and his understanding of craft techniques. In the 1950s, Mouille created some of his most famous pieces: his lighting fixtures. He concentrated on designing lamps that were both functional and aesthetically pleasing. His creations were characterized by organic shapes and flowing lines, combined with an ingenious use of metal, particularly aluminum and brass. Serge Mouille's lamps were often inspired by the natural world, especially insects and plants. He designed lights such as the "Serpente" lamp, which was articulated and allowed light to be precisely directed, and the "Araignée" lamp, which featured several pivoting arms. His creations were both functional and sculptural, making each lamp a work of art in itself. Despite their growing popularity, Serge Mouille's creations were produced in limited quantities and became prized collector's items for design enthusiasts. Today, his lamps continue to be reproduced and appreciated for their timeless design and hand-crafted quality. Serge Mouille has left a lasting imprint on the world of design, and his work is recognized internationally. His innovative and elegant creations remain a source of inspiration for contemporary designers, and his legacy continues to influence the field of lighting design.
