Lafer began his career in the 1960s as a mechanical engineer, but soon turned to industrial design. In 1961, he founded his own design company, Lafer S.A. Indústria Brasileira de Móveis, which quickly became one of Brazil's leading modern furniture manufacturers. Among Lafer's most famous creations are the MP-163 and MP-165 lounge chairs, and the MP-053 sofa. These pieces were known for their comfort and functionality, with designs that allowed users to adjust angles and positions for optimum comfort. Over the years, Lafer won numerous awards for his furniture creations, including the Brazilian Art Critics Association Design Award in 1975 and the IF Hanover Prize in 1979. Although Lafer retired in the 1990s, his creations are still highly prized by modern furniture collectors and are considered emblematic examples of Brazilian design.
