He studied at the Groningen School of Art, then at the School of Art and Industrial Design in The Hague. After graduating, he worked for various companies before founding his own design studio, Jelles & Partners, in Amsterdam in 1970. Over the course of his career, Jelles has worked on a variety of projects, from furniture design to industrial machine design to consumer electronics. He also worked on interior design projects for restaurants and hotels. Jelles was a pioneer of sustainable and environmentally-friendly design. He was one of the first designers to integrate recyclable materials into his projects and to reduce the environmental impact of the products he designed. During his career, Jelles won numerous awards for his work, including the prestigious Dutch Design Award in 1993. His creations have also been exhibited in museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Jelles died in 2002 at the age of 63, leaving behind him a lasting legacy in the world of industrial design.
