In 1944, Hvidt and Mølgaard Nielsen started working together and established their own design company in 1946. They quickly gained a reputation for their modern, functional and elegant furniture, which was produced by renowned manufacturers such as Fritz Hansen and France & Søn. Their work is characterized by the use of natural materials, such as wood and rattan, and by simple, uncluttered forms. Among Hvidt & Mølgaard Nielsen's most famous creations are the AX chair and the France & Søn chair, both of which have become icons of Danish design. They also designed furniture for UNESCO in Paris and the UN headquarters in New York. Their collaboration came to an end in 1975 when Mølgaard Nielsen died. Hvidt continued to work alone until his death in 1986.
