He is best known for his career in lighting and for founding the Artemide company in 1959 with Sergio Mazza. Together, they created modern, functional lamps for domestic and professional lighting, which quickly gained international renown. In addition to his work at Artemide, Gismondi has also worked for other renowned companies, such as Flos, Danese Milano and Memphis, to name but a few. Gismondi has won numerous awards for his work, including the Compasso d'Oro in 1967, 1979, 1981, 1989, 1995 and 2001. In 2005, he was named Chevalier de l'Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur in France. Ernesto Gismondi died on December 31, 2020 in Milan, Italy, at the age of 89. His contribution to contemporary design was recognized by many experts in the field.
