Madsen designed many pieces during his career, notably with Ejner Larsen, with whom he created chairs, armchairs, dining tables, desks and more. His best-known creation is certainly the incredible Metropolitan chair (1949-1952). Aksel Bender Madsen was born into a farming family in Denmark in 1916. After an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker, he studied furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1940. During his studies, Madsen met his friend and future collaborator: Ejner Larsen. Together, they presented numerous projects at the various Cabinetmakers Guild's exhibitions in Copenhagen. Madsen also worked with two talented Scandinavian designers: Kaare Klint and Arne Jacobsen. Bender Madsen has left an indelible mark on the history of Scandinavian design.
