He has worked as a designer for renowned companies such as Artifort, Hema and Polaroid. Some of his creations can be found in major museums and have been exhibited. In 1974, he created the Strip chair, a timeless piece whose modernity continues to seduce. Gijs Bakker was born in 1942 in the Netherlands. He studied design and jewelry in Amsterdam and Stockholm. In 1992, he became a design consultant for the ceramics manufacturer Cor Unum. A year later, he founded the Droog Design collective with design historian and critic Renny Ramakers. He was artistic director until 2009. In 1996, he and Marijke Vallanzasca founded "Chi ha paura...?" (Who's afraid? in Italian). The aim was to demonstrate the importance of a piece of jewelry and to go beyond its approach as a mere fashion accessory. He also taught at schools such as the Arnhem Art Institute, the Eindhoven Institute of Technology and the Eindhoven Design Academy. He also contributed to the rise of Taiwanese design as artistic director of the HAN gallery.
