Product description
Urtica fissa fabric is the traditional material used to mak clothing, bedding and bags of the Nu, Dulong and Wa nationality of Yunnan, China. When a girl is married, her dowry must include one or several pieces of Urtica fissa bed mats and tea mats hand-woven by her mother or her family relatives, these bed mats and tea mats will be passed down from generation to generation by the girls in the family. Urtica fissa fabric is very strong, it can remain intact, becoming whiter and softer as time pass, just like old grandmother´s love and care to the grandchildren.
Under the snowy mountains, on both sides of the turbulent river, the climate is warm and temperate, abundant rainfall, wild Urtica fissa grow in large patches here. People living here applies Urtica fissa to snake or insect bites for detoxification, while women pick back Urtica fissa, clean it under the flowing mountain springs, after a series of procedures including peeling the hemp, twisting the hempen thread, beam-warping, washing, woven, dye white (cloth burned with water with charcoal ash for one day and night, then clean in the flowing river.) A piece of Urtica fissa fabric is finally completed.
These three pieces of Urtica fissa tea mats were found in a remote Wa village and are nearly 100 years old. Handmade and not being as uniform as the machine-made tea mats, they are charming in their own way. There is a saying: “if the Parthenon is not made by marble, the crown is not made from gold, the stars do not shine, and the sea is silent, what beauty of the world it is?”.
