Extraordinary bronze-patinated plaster sculpture by Antoine Amorgasti, an Italian-born artist who spent most of his career in Belgium. He studied at the Berchem Academy and worked as a molder in the workshops of animal sculptor Josué Dupont during the Belgian Art Deco period. He is particularly renowned for his animal sculptures in plaster or terracotta, materials to which he then applied a patina simulating bronze. Hand-signed by the artist.
The present work depicts a lioness with her cubs, a tender, naturalistic scene that conveys a sense of maternal calm and protection. The theme of motherhood is at the heart of this work. Amorgasti captures an intimate, affectionate scene, reflecting a profound observation of nature. The position of the panther's head, tilted slightly downwards as she interacts with her cubs, reflects an emotional bond that evokes tenderness, demonstrating the sculptor's ability to infuse human emotions into his animal representations. In terms of composition, the cubs, who climb onto their mother and play with each other, add a sense of movement and dynamism that contrasts with the serenity of the maternal figure.
Although the work is executed in bronze-patinated plaster, the final finish creates the illusion of a solid bronze sculpture. The patina adds a metallic sheen that enriches the work's texture and appearance. The base, made from the same material, is painted to imitate terracotta or the very ground on which the family would stand in their natural environment.
This sculpture is a remarkable example of Antoon Amorgasti's ability to combine naturalism with a deep emotional charge.
