Maria Pergay (October 28, 1930 – October 31, 2023) was a French innovator in the field of stainless steel furniture and object design. She favored steel for its strength, durability, and availability, among other qualities.
Pergay rose to prominence in the 1960s when Uginox, a French stainless-steel company represented by Gérard Martel, asked her to design small decorative pieces. This collaboration led to her creation of a furniture collection, which was showcased at the Maison Jardin gallery in 1968. The collection featured notable designs, including the Flying Carpet Daybed and the Ring Chair, which she described as inspired by the spiraling form of an orange peel. “I was peeling an orange for my children, and thought how nice it looked,” Pergay shared with *The New York Times*. One of her iconic pieces, the Vague stool (1968), is now part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection.
Pergay's commissions included high-profile names such as Givenchy, Pierre Cardin, Fendi, Christian Dior, Jacques Heim, and Salvador Dalí. Although she gained more recognition in Europe, where her work was first exhibited in 1971 in a show curated by Air France, she received wider acclaim in the United States with a retrospective hosted by New York's Demisch Danant gallery in 2006. In 2013, her installation *Metamorphosis* was featured at the Design Miami fair.
