Product description
Sol LEWITT FIVE-POINTED STAR WITH COLORED BANDS (BARCELONA) 1992 screenprint on Arches paper signed and numbered in pencil 90 x 63 cm published by : Olympic centenary printed by : Watanabe Studio - New York edition : 250 copies This copy: 89/250, framed Purchased at Husgallery France in 2016 Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) made a major contribution to the most cerebral "isms" of the 20th century, particularly minimalism and conceptual art. His infamous large-scale "wall drawings" destabilized and expanded the conventional definition of authorship. Many of his works were the result of extensive and detailed instructions rather than his own hand or labor. Moreover, these classic "wall drawings" were often temporary - lasting only the duration of an exhibition. In 1992, LeWitt was commissioned to create this screen print for the 100th anniversary of the Olympic Games. The work was included in the Olympic Centennial Suite portfolio, with works by 50 international artists. "Five Pointed Star with Color Bands" is an example of LeWitt's work from the 1980s and 1990s. During this period, LeWitt began to focus more on making screen prints. During this period, LeWitt embraced a palette of rich fall colors, often executed in gouache. He remained fascinated by shapes, grids and their relationship to color. This hypnotic and playful star is a recurring motif throughout the artist's oeuvre and is a prime example of his signature hard abstraction and unwavering exploration of geometry. Sol LeWitt's work is represented in numerous public institutions, including MoMA (New York), the Tate Modern (London), the National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.) and the Centre Pompidou (Paris).
