Product description
Serigraphy on sturdy silver foil by the famous pop art artist Robert Rauschenberg.
Robert Rauschenberg (October 22, 1925, Port Arthur, Texas – May 12, 2008, Captiva Island, Florida) was an American artist who founded the American pop art movement.
Milton Rauschenberg (his real name) grew up in a strict Christian family. As an eighteen-year-old, he came into contact with art through museum visits. From 1942 to 1945 he served in the US Navy where he became aware of his drawing skills. He studied in Paris at the Académie Julian in 1947, and from 1948 to 1950 in North Carolina at the Black Montain College, where he was taught by the exiled Bauhaus teacher Josef Albers. Albers' strict methods were the source of inspiration to do everything radically differently. He said of Albers, "What I learned from Albers' lessons is to do the exact opposite of what he said."
From 1949 he took classes at the famous Art Students League of New York, where he graduated in 1952. In the following period, Rauschenberg started making collages. His first combine dates from 1953. The Combine Bed from 1955, consisting of oil paint, pillow, sheets and blankets, is said to have used his own bed linen to create this work of art because he had no money to buy canvas.
Rauschenberg soon noticed that individualistic expressionism was an art movement that he did not appreciate very much. That is why he developed a reality focused on art. The statement was based on this: the viewer and artist are equal. With this he wanted to make it clear that the latter had to actively participate in the creative event.
He evolved from abstract expressionist to pop art artist and more specifically assemblage artist. He was known as a painter, sculptor, photographer, performer and choreographer.
Robert Rauschenberg was inspired by Andy Warhol (with his screen prints), John Cage with his philosophy and Jasper Johns (for his objects and symbols). He had long-term romantic relationships with the artists Cy Twombly and Jasper Johns.
