This elegant lounge set Senator, consisting of a three-seater sofa and an armchair, was designed by Ole Wanscher for the Danish P. Jeppesen Møbelfabrik in the 1950s-1960s. The frame is made of solid teak. The backrest is characterized by an interesting shape and the profiling of this element makes the set extremely comfortable. The beige-sand-colored cushions are covered with the original, thick fabric. The combination of the organic shape of the furniture with the colors of the frame and cushions emphasizes the sophisticated aesthetic.
Ole Wanscher was born in Copenhagen in 1903. He was a Danish architect and designer and an important player in the Danish modernist movement from the middle of the last century. In the postwar era, the simple and refined aesthetic he achieved by reinventing classic forms helped define Scandinavian design, and many of his works became the basis of Scandinavian homes. Wanscher studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under renowned architect-designer Kaare Klint. After graduation, Wanscher worked with Klint from 1924 to 1927, and after Klint's death he was appointed to Klint's professorship at the academy - a position he held until his retirement in 1973. Like Klint, Wanscher disagreed with the modernist approach and rejected the past completely. He preferred a classical but minimal aesthetic based on a careful study of the human body. Wanscher was also heavily influenced by Greek, Chinese and Egyptian designs - which he encountered on many travels - and movements such as Viennese Art Nouveau, Biedermeier and Shaker.
The set is in original vintage condition with light scratches and signs of use befitting its age.
