Ernst was born in 1891 in Brühl, a suburb of Cologne. He began studying philosophy, art history and psychology at the University of Bonn in 1910, but soon dropped out to focus entirely on art. In 1912 he had his first exhibition. In 1914 he traveled to the Montparnasse district of Paris where artists from all over the world gathered. There he met Guillaume Apollinaire, Robert Delaunay and Hans Arp. When World War I broke out later that year, Ernst had to join the German army. In 1918 he married the art historian Luise Straus.
