Shortly afterwards they moved to Santpoort. His father was a decoration painter and advertising artist. School and Jan was not always a successful match. Eventually he decided to go to the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam. He received his further education at the Rijksmuseum, where he was admitted without an entrance exam, based on his well-stocked folder of drawings. Here he was taught by Jan van Tongeren, an old-fashioned solid teacher for whom he had great admiration. He was then admitted to the National Academy of Fine Arts. Then the time had come to further determine his own path, compared himself to van Gogh and drew inspiration from that with great success.
