Product description
Used 20th century solid oak Globe Wernicke bookcase.
Consisting of modular sections, a top cover and a drawer, this cabinet represents a pioneering design.
Otto Wernicke, a German immigrant to America, began producing stackable cabinets in his furniture workshop in 1893. In 1900, his business was acquired by the Globe Files Company, a specialized office furniture company, leading to the creation of the new company called The Globe Wernicke Company. In addition to manufacturing in the United States, these cabinets were also manufactured under license in London. The innovative design of the modular bookcase proved to be a great success, and Globe Wernicke cabinets became highly sought after, especially in libraries and offices.
They enjoyed considerable popularity with law firms where this arrangement also originated.
This also resulted in the nickname "Barrister bookcase.
