Gerrit Rietveld, 'Utrecht' chair for Metz & Co. The 'Utrecht' chair, one of the few comfortable chairs designed by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld for Metz and Co, 1935. This chair is special because it was the first upholstered chair designed by Rietveld. It was executed by Metz & Co, Gerard van de Groenekan built the wooden frame. This chair was produced by Metz & Co from 1935 to 1975. This copy was probably bought around 1960. The chair was reupholstered 18 years ago with new fabric, Kvadrat Divina 3. The entire inside of the chair has been kept original, the old jute straps characteristic of Metz & Co's chairs and also the spring suspension inside has been reused as this was still intact. The upholstery is still good, some discoloration and wear on the armrest and a very small hole on the right back of the armrest.
Provenance: This chair was originally owned by the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
