Product description
Figure III by Tom Heywood is a striking modern sculpture crafted from wood. The piece features a minimalist design with a smooth, black finish, embodying a sense of mystery and elegance. Its abstract form and clean lines make it a captivating addition to any contemporary art collection.
At the end of Summer 2022, I had the opportunity of taking on some very old large ash and tree stumps that had fallen in Storm Eunice of that year.
I have always had a fascination with human depictions throughout time, and having practiced my own carvings throughout the years on small figures, I was confident enough in my ability to create larger life-scale forms.
My biggest source of inspiration, I would say, was the Moai figures on Easter Island. The fact they have been carved and lined up in a very mysterious manner really captivates me.
I worked on this project for just over a year, through all elements of the weather. Like all of my works, they have been created by the wonder of nature. Once a tree's life cycle has come to an end, I take it upon myself to work on the timber and transform it into a certain form. I take great satisfaction when my forms are placed into natural landscapes where they were created; it's always quite a powerful moment.
This figure has been hand-carved before being subjected to an intense fire which naturally cures the timber. The figure has also been tarred, meaning it can live outside in the elements for many decades to come.
