Eugenio Carmi (1920-2016) was a painter, sculptor and graphic artist (lithographer). He is considered one of the most important representatives of abstract art in Italy. Born in Genoa, Carmi moved to Switzerland in 1938 because of the racial laws imposed by Benito Mussolini. He studied chemistry at ETH Zurich.
After initially devoting himself to 'Art Informel' with free abstract work, he started making geometric abstract (constructivist) work in the early fifties. Although the majority of his work consists of paintings on canvas, his (graphic) work on paper, such as his lithographs, and his sculptures also form an important part of his oeuvre.
Carmi was good friends with the well-known author Umberto Eco with whom he collaborated as an illustrator on various projects.
