Els Maasson (1967, Maasland) graduated in 1992 from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Since then she has exhibited at home and abroad. Maasson makes objects, graphics and bowls from handmade paper and regularly works on commission. She makes etchings and linocuts. These are not printed in color and later colored manually with ink, watercolor or gold paint. In the linoleum prints, the tear edge of the paper plays a role in the overall image. Sometimes the paper gets wrinkled before printing. At other times, multiple (printing) techniques have been used within one print, such as linoleum printing, etching, relief printing, planographic printing and watercolour. The print runs (except by order) are usually no higher than 20. She has now published two books: 'Water king, the animal kingdom of Els Maasson' and 'A van spider'. In her work, the animal theme is indispensable. She has been referred to as the clerk of Noah's Ark, compiling a reading board of all the animals of creation in a grand project. Her colorful etchings and linoleum prints exude the atmosphere of old picture books. "Images of animals and plants, usually provided with a text or a title, as an addition to the image; this is what most of Els Maasson's works look like. The work is immediately recognizable due to the personal visual language. And at the same time the images have the universal of the kind of old picture books that you have memories of for a lifetime, after seeing them for the first time as a child [...] The work of Els Maasson is based on two essential facts: We live in a world that is full of with signs and meanings. And to maintain that cloud of signs and meanings, images must be made, for which a sense of craft and careful choice of material are essential. These two starting points are layered and need each other."
