Elles BB, an artist "in" format.
She started painting later in life, at first with some shaky steps, but soon she experienced appreciation and recognition in her own environment and after a few years abroad. If you ask her to tell something about herself or write something down, she says, "I paint." That statement is significant for her work, it is what she does.
All her life she has been involved in design, decoration and fashion. For example, she worked for a number of well-known Dutch interior designers. She herself had a store in Deventer for a long time. First vintage and curiosities and later American seconds combined with fashion. She always tried to beautify her surroundings. She can only find rest and peace in a harmonious environment. And if there is none, she will create it.
Why did you start painting, I asked. Her answer was great. You would expect a whole story about training, art school and going abroad. But she said, "I was in an art supplies store with my sister and my younger sister bought some small canvases and then I thought, let's give it a try."
Anyone can put something on a canvas, but you can't immediately describe it as Art. That's up to the viewer. That environment gets bigger because you get noticed. Elles paints large canvases with panache. You could say she sculpts her canvases. She almost never uses a brush, but usually works with a painter's knife or something else at her fingertips. She usually works "wet in wet" because she is always in a hurry. She says she is in a "flow" and can't stop. Most artists you meet say they see something in a vision. Elles can't, she can't visualize anything in front of her mind's eye. For her, it means that she starts working with a vague feeling and then the creation comes about. And by that time she still sees what she has created.
Many artists work within a particular theme or subject. Elles did, but only to a certain extent. She has certain styles, in which she creates similar paintings. But then she starts with something completely different. Again, in a short or longer series.
Thanks to her website, www.ellesBB.nl, not only clients could find her, but she is and is regularly asked at home and abroad for exhibitions and galleries.
Meanwhile, her work can already be admired in five Dutch and foreign books.
