Product description
An extraordinary Danish Mid Century vintage teak and wenge Model 550 space saving dining table designed by Ole Gjerløv-Knudsen and Torben Lind for France and Son.
This design takes its name from the pivoting and rotating comma shaped leaves that can be unlocked to remove one section from the circular spiral shape to create the smaller contour of the Yin-Yang sign. It’s a unique design that remains today one of the rarest and most beautiful extending dining tables produced during the Mid Century Modern period.
Designed by Ole Gjerløv-Knudsen and Torben Lind in 1963 the model 550 table was produced by master furniture makers France & Son . Often referred to as the Rolls Royce of Danish Furniture manufacturers France and Son worked with many of the most highly regarded designers of the time and were renowned for producing finely crafted and innovative furniture.
The table features a heavy and sculptural Wenge wood base with table top sections made from dark stained teak and benefits from having the maker’s original decal still present on the underneath. It also features a black plywood and laminate scalloped triangular shaped insert (as shown in one of the photographs) that can be used to create a seamless centre section when all the table top leaves are locked into place. The table is in excellent condition with only a few minor knocks and marks commensurate with age.
In the extended circular configuration it can seat 6 but it’s versatility allows it to be reduced to a space saving size to seat 4; thus making it an ideal choice for a smaller apartment or dining area.
