Product description
Set of 2 Tonneau chairs All wood Vintage original Steiner edition Excellent general condition Created in 1954 by Pierre Guariche for Steiner, the Tonneau chair, like its compatriots Amsterdam, Tulipe and Vampire, is a true icon of 20th century design. In every way, it meets the imperatives imposed on post-war designers: to design mass-produced furniture at a price affordable to all. Very comfortable thanks to its soft molded plywood shell, round and sensual, it has a modern and elegant aesthetic thanks to its slim black tubular metal base. This innovative chair is France's first mass-produced plywood chair. The seat is bent from a single molded plywood shell, whose disjointed ends are joined by visible screws at the seat. Pierre Guariche was born in 1926. He studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, graduating in 1949. He then worked in Marcel Gascoin's studio, presenting his first designs at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs and the Salon des Arts Ménagers. In 1953, he designed the legendary "Tonneau" chair for Steiner, first in plastic (1953) then in folded plywood (1954). With Joseph-André Motte and Michel Mortier, he founded the Atelier de Recherche Plastique in 1954. In 1957, he was appointed Artistic Director of the Meurop furniture manufacturing company. He subsequently shared his knowledge with students at the Ecole Supérieure d'Architecture de Tournai and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris. He has brought a personal and innovative touch to design, combining aesthetics with mass production.
