Bram van Velde, along with his brother Geer, grew up in extreme poverty. The van Velde family led a vagrant existence and had just enough money to eat. How extraordinary that Bram and Geer van Velde achieved great fame as self-taught artists, both nationally and internationally. Bram moved to Paris in the 1920s, where he was particularly inspired by Matisse. With exhibitions in Paris, Germany and America, he established himself as one of the greatest Dutch modern artists of the 20th century. His work is characterized by a lyrical abstraction, in which figurative elements are no longer present, unlike, for example, the ideas of the Cobra.
