Nice work framed
Tuscany
timeless and contemporary
The work of self-taught Toscani (1940) 'pops' at you. As a spectator you are overwhelmed by an explosion of color and apparently chaotic design. The use of primary colors in particular creates enormous dynamism in her work, whether it concerns paintings, graphics, objects or collages.
She is clearly influenced by the Cobra movement and therefore uses an abstract expressionist style. The creative process is very important for Toscani: the work does not arise from a preconceived plan or existing framework, but is often the result of searching for the correct relationship of the different color elements to each other. These elements or carriers are very different in shape, size, structure and material. For example, we see the use of wood, canvas and perspex in addition to paper, newspapers and photos. Elements from reality such as painted over or printed newspaper reports are alternated with clear photos of, for example, vegetables, fruit, fish or people, with torn or cut-out strips of paper glued to canvas next to or behind them. The temptation is great to distill a meaning from this twisted reality, but that is certainly not what the artist intends. The newspaper pieces are never too prominent. They are used because of their size and structure, but never because of a clear message. For her, the contemporary takes on a timeless meaning.
Bep Toscani lives and works in Oudesluis.
