Ad van Hassel trained as a visual artist in the studio of Maarten Krabbé. There he became proficient in various techniques.
Cityscapes, landscapes and flower still lifes are often the theme in his work. His cityscapes show an extraordinarily keen insight into spatial perspective. In the etchings in particular, the perspective lines are depicted with a sense of detail. The State Print Room of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam included one of his etchings in its collection in 1985.
Between 1981 and 1986, Van Hassel had his own art dealership, but despite the commercial success, his work as an artist increasingly gained the upper hand and he re-established himself as a free artist. Where his earlier work was mainly based on reality, he now gives free rein to his imagination and concentrates on screen printing, in which his preference for color play is given free rein.
