Michael Thonet, a German-Austrian furniture maker and industrialist, was one of the first to take furniture industrially into production. He became one of the greatest pioneers in furniture design, partly due to his invention of steam bending wood. In 1856 he opened a factory in Koritschan, a town in Moravia that had a good railway connection and was located in the middle of the beech forests, which provided the best raw material for his chair production. In this new factory, the wood was no longer cooked in glue, but bent after hours of hot steam. As a result, he finally succeeded in bending solid wood rods in 1859, paving the way for mass furniture production. Koritschan also produced models of chairs that were assembled with a simple connection by means of screws and that could be exported in parts and sent to the consumer.
