Modernist desk, Frits Spanjaard, Netherlands, ca 1930. Frits Spanjaard, influenced by Hendrik Wouda, designed balanced and simple pieces of furniture. His uniquely abstract style and refined use of composition set him apart from other rationalist designers from The Hague School. The use of primary colors is a direct reference to De Stijl. Throughout his career Spanjaard, played with the application of color, searching for contrast and dialogue between shapes. This table, together with the matching chair, is a fine example of this design attitude. It was part of the Exhibition "De Klare Lijn" curated by Boris Devis. Different types of wood.
