Wikkelsø is a prolific designer of sofas, armchairs, tables, chairs and bars. He experimented with different types of design, moving from handcrafted to more industrial production during the 1970s. Illum Wikkelsø was born in Denmark in 1919. He trained as a cabinetmaker in 1938, then studied at the Danish School of Design, graduating in 1941. He began his career working for cabinetmaker Jacob Kjær, then for the famous architects Hvidt & Mølgaard. Building on his success, he decided to set up his own studio in 1954. Over the course of his career, the Danish designer worked with major furniture manufacturers such as N. Eilersen, F. Christensen, Komfort/Dansk Form, Holger Christiansen and Søren Willadsen Møbelfabrik. Although little known to the general public, Illum Wikkelsø is a talented Danish designer who has contributed to the rise of Scandinavian design worldwide.
