Waeckerlin has worked for a number of well-known companies, including Horgenglarus, a Swiss furniture manufacturer, for whom he created a series of beechwood furniture, and Idealheim, a company specializing in the production of household products. His work is characterized by a functional, minimalist approach to design. He often used materials such as wood and metal, and avoided unnecessary ornamentation. Waeckerlin was also a pioneer of modular design, which enabled the creation of evolving furniture systems. Dieter Waeckerlin won numerous awards for his design achievements, including the prestigious Good Design Award from the Chicago Institute of Design in 1957. His career was cut short by his sudden death in 1972. Today, his work is exhibited in numerous design museums, including the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany.
