Born in Vyborg, Finland, Tynell studied metalwork and sculpture at the Tampere School of Industrial Art before moving to Helsinki to work in a metal workshop. In 1918, he founded his own company, Taito Oy, specializing in the manufacture of decorative metal lighting fixtures. Over the years, Tynell developed a unique style characterized by organic shapes and floral motifs. He was known for his perforated brass shades, which created interesting light patterns when lit. Tynell worked with many leading Finnish brands, such as Stockmann-Orno, Idman and Taito, as well as internationally renowned designers such as Alvar Aalto. Tynell won numerous awards for his work, including the gold medal at the 1937 Paris World's Fair. His creations are still highly sought-after by design collectors today.
