He is the creator of such design icons as the Asteroid lamp (1968), the Carlton bookcase (1981), the Westside chair (1983) and the Ospité table (1984). Ettore Sottsass was born in Austria in 1917. In 1929, he moved with his family to Italy, where he studied architecture like his father, although he had a passion for painting. He completed his studies in Turin in 1939, worked for a time with his father and then founded his own studio in Milan in 1947. Sottsass developed many impressive professional skills: he was an artist, designer, architect, consultant for design companies, magazine editor and publisher. Over the course of his career, Sottsass received numerous awards, including four Compasso d'Oro. A legendary designer, he is credited with the birth of design groups such as Memphis (1981), Alchimia (1976) and Studio Sottsass Associati (1982). Sottsass left an indelible mark on twentieth-century design.
