Omersa began his career in the 1930s, working as a wood and stone sculptor for Belgrade's National Museum. During the Second World War, he served in the Yugoslav army and was captured by the Germans. After the war, he moved to England where he worked for Liberty London as a furniture designer. It was in the late 1950s that Dimitri Omersa began designing the leather animals that were to become his signature. The first models were pigs and dogs, but he soon expanded his range to include hippopotamuses, elephants and rhinoceroses. These animals were made from high-quality leather, cut and sewn by hand, and filled with horsehair. They became very popular with Liberty London customers and were sold worldwide. Today, Omersa leather animals have become collector's items and are highly sought after by collectors worldwide. The Omersa brand continues to produce high-quality leather animals, and the Omersa family is still involved in the business.
