Newson studied sculpture and jewelry design in Sydney before moving to Tokyo to work in the design studio of renowned architect Toyo Ito. In 1991, he moved to Paris, where he opened his own design studio. He then worked in London, where he became creative director of furniture brand Cappellini. His most famous creations include the Lockheed Lounge chair, made in 1986, which set a sales record for a piece of Australian designer furniture, and the Ikepod watch, produced in collaboration with Oliver Ike in 1994. In 2016, Newson joined Apple's design team to work on projects such as the Apple Watch and the MacBook Pro. In 2019, he was named Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honor for his contribution to culture and design.
