He designed one of the most famous pieces of designer furniture: the Barcelona lounge chair (1929). A timeless piece of seating, it has stood the test of time, finding its place in all types and styles of interior. He built many buildings, including skyscrapers. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was born in Aachen in 1886. He joined his family's stonemasonry business, then worked in Bruno Paul's architectural office in Berlin before joining Peter Behrens. Behrens had a major influence on Mies van der Rohe's thinking. Behrens guided him towards Prussian classicism, Russian constructivism and the De Stijl group. The architect introduced him to the famous founder of the Bauhaus, Walter Gropius. After various architectural projects, a contribution to G magazine and directing the Bauhaus art school in Dessau, he left for the United States to escape Nazism. Thanks to his innovative eye and unique style, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe quickly became one of the world's most famous designers.
