Malaval began his writing career in 1953 with the publication of his first novel, "Les Rats de Montsouris". He rose to fame in 1967 with the publication of "Les Enfants des Justes", which won the Prix Goncourt that same year. Malaval has written some twenty novels, all set in the Corrèze, which have become very popular with the general public. His novels have often been adapted for television, including "Les Enfants des Justes", "La Bicyclette bleue" and "Les Cœurs simples". Malaval was known for his simple, direct style and his realistic depiction of rural life in France. He was also mayor of Brive-la-Gaillarde from 1977 to 1983.
