Harry Epstein studied architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture at University College London, while Lou studied design at the Royal College of Art in London. Their training in complementary fields enabled them to collaborate effectively on numerous projects. In the 1930s, Harry and Lou Epstein founded their own furniture manufacturing company, known as "H. & L. Epstein Ltd". They quickly gained a reputation for their innovative style and use of high-quality materials. Their creations were characterized by elegant shapes, clean lines and attention to detail. One of the Epstein brothers' most iconic designs is the "Cocktail" chair, which has become a symbol of modern British furniture. This chair was known for its curved back and comfortable upholstery, offering a combination of style and functionality. Over the years, Harry and Lou Epstein expanded their product range to include sofas, armchairs, tables and other home furnishings. Their company enjoyed considerable success, winning several awards and distinctions for their work. The Epstein brothers' business continued to prosper until the Second World War, which temporarily interrupted their production. After the war, they resumed business and helped shape the post-war landscape of British design. Harry Epstein died in 1970, but Lou continued to run the company for several years before retiring. Although the Epstein company eventually closed, furniture designed by Harry and Lou Epstein continues to be sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts worldwide. The Epstein brothers' legacy as innovative and visionary designers remains intact, and their work is considered an integral part of the modern British design movement.
