Chiesa studied architecture at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and worked for the Murano glass company from the 1920s onwards. He designed numerous luminaires for the renowned Italian design company FontanaArte, which he co-founded in 1932 with architect and designer Gio Ponti. Chiesa's creations are characterized by an innovative use of glass, combining organic and geometric shapes with modern materials such as metal and brass. Some of his most famous pieces include the 0024 table lamp and the 0023 floor lamp. Chiesa also worked on other design projects, including furniture and decorative objects, but it is for his work in lighting and glass that he is best known today. His influence on 20th-century Italian design is considerable, and his creations continue to be sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts worldwide.
