A major figure in Finnish design, throughout his career he has sought to create a genuine harmony between aesthetics, functionalism and respect for the landscape. The balance he sought between tradition and modernity led him to explore the use of plywood. The Paimio 41 armchair, the Tea Trolley sideboard and the Pendant Lamp luminaire bear witness to his innovative style. Alvar Aalto was born in Finland in 1898. He studied architecture before opening his own practice. His architectural designs brought him international renown. In opposition to classicism, his approach is part of the Scandinavian modernist movement. Aalto had his own style: he liked to experiment with materials, placing them at the heart of his designs and drawing asymmetrical curves to create functional, elegant furniture. His work is rooted in an organic approach and an admiration for nature. Differing from the trend towards geometric forms and industrial materials advocated by some of his contemporaries, Aalto left his mark on twentieth-century design through his innovative approach.
