Bidjar carpets are made in Bijar a city in Persia (Iran), where mainly Kurds live. The city is located at 1940 meters and is therefore also called the roof of Persia. Carpets have been made there for centuries. Since the period of the Acheamenids, 550 to 330 BC, the city has been known for its beautiful carpets. The carpets are made mainly by Kurdish people in villages around the city. They set the looms upright against the wall in their own homes, as factories or weaving studios do not exist. A Bidjar rug is often considered the strongest Persian rug.
How they are made
Weavers knot with the Turkish knot, using a heavy comb of metal and wood, which causes the pile of the rug to stand down.
The colors of Bidjar rugs are bright and usually consist of red and blue with beige motifs and elements. The motifs are traditional Persian decorations such as flowers and a medallion in the center. Sometimes motifs of animals or willows can be found on the carpets.
Light discoloration, upper left or lower right (depending on position) of rug. Photos are attached.
