Product description
ATO table clock, Art Deco, Marble and onyx, 30's - France
Impressive French Art Deco table clock from electric clock manufacturer ATO of Besançon, France. The Art Deco style is characterized by elegance, geometric shapes and high-quality materials. The architectural form is very distinctive, with angular lines and a design reminiscent of a small Egyptian-inspired monument. The rectangular base is raised by two high triangular side panels, creating a frame for the clock face.
It is composed mainly of two stones, emerald onyx from Brazil and black marble from Belgium, a spectacular combination of colors. The black marble gives a solid, elegant appearance, while the emerald onyx brings a contrast of color and depth thanks to its veins. The dial is metallic, square in shape, with ATO's characteristic silver-plated spider-web pattern and large Art Deco-style numerals.
It is made by the ATO brand, known for its high-quality electric watches from the Art Deco period. It is one of the first battery-powered watches. This lends historical and collector's value to this watch, which combines luxurious materials and geometric design to create a functional yet decorative piece.
Overhauled by a professional watchmaker, the movement has been replaced by a new one. It is a modern battery-operated movement. The original hands have been assembled with the new mechanism. The original mechanism is supplied, to be kept by the purchaser.
Léon Hatot (1883-1953) and the ATO
Léon Hatot trained at the Ecole Nationale d'Horlogerie in Besançon between 1895 and 1898, where he set up his first watchmaking workshop. In 1920, he founded Etablissements Léon Hatot, a limited company based in Paris. By 1930, he employed over 50 people. ATO was the first known watch manufacturer to experiment with unusual materials and working methods. Léon Hatot was interested in the technical aspects of his craft, particularly the possibilities of electrical energy. He founded a subsidiary dedicated exclusively to the research and development of battery-powered electric clocks. Working with Marius Lavet (1894-1980), an engineer at the Ecole Supérieure d'Electricité, the first electric clocks were produced in 1923. They were marketed under the ATO brand with great success. Today, ATO is part of the Swiss Swatch Group.
