Product description
Dutch Modernist Tubular Steel Armchair in the manner of Marcel Breuer Originally created by the Bauhaus school of design, the tubular steel chair was inspired by bicycle handlebars. Up to 1925, steel tubing had mainly been used for hospital furniture. During that time, German, French and Dutch designers revolutionized the modern interior by developing tubular metal furnishings. Their first pieces were for instance shown at the 1927 ‘Die Wohnung’ exhibition in Stuttgart and as part of the ‘Deutscher Werkbund’ at Paris’ Grand Palais in 1930. Soon, tubular steel furniture became quite the fashion in avant-garde circles. With their sleek silhouettes and minimal use of material and space, the tubular steel chairs made a perfect match with the new steel, concrete and glass architecture of the modernist era. This particular AF2 armchair is a later interpretation of Marcel Breuer’s original S35 ‘club chair’ for the living room and was created during the 1930s by Dutch company VEHA. Here, we see a wonderfully constructed chair with a black tubular steel frame, stabilizing bars in the front and backside, beechwood armrests, and upholstered with cognac learher. This VEHA model is quite rare and in good condition, and therefore a true collector’s item. Dimensions: W 57cm H 88 D 80 Sh 36 Arm H 56
